When The Lying Game premiered on Freeform (formerly ABC Family) in 2011, Alexandra Chando, the show’s leading lady, immediately caught our eye. Not only was she mega talented and proved so through her nuanced performance as Sutton Mercer and Emma Becker, two vastly different long-lost twins, on the mystery series, but her beautiful doe eyes and dark hair reminded us of another mesmerizing actress: Nina Dobrev. Inspired by their similar features, as well Chando’s interesting connection to The Vampire Diaries (she’s close friends with fellow As the World Turns alum Zach Roerig, and actually auditioned for the part of Elena Gilbert during pilot season), we wrote up this “doppelganger alert” post for kicks.
Flash forward to 2016….
Aside from a fun stint on Castle and a guest-starring arc in VH1’s Hindsight, Chando has, for the most part, kept out of the spotlight in terms of high-profile television projects. And now, much to our great delight, the brunette beauty pops up in the most surprising of places: the preview trailer for The Vampire Diaries episode 8×08!
Her cameo in the promo for “We Have History Together” is brief – blink and you’ll miss it – but due to recent TVD events, we couldn’t help but get excited. Considering Damon was reminded of his undying love for Elena in the show’s final Christmas special, Chando’s appearance feels far from coincidental. If the eldest Salvatore brother could be triggered at the mere sight of Elena’s vervain necklace, which Caroline gave him as a gift in the hopes that he’ll snap out of whatever dark spell Sybil has him under, can you imagine how he’ll react to someone who not only looks like Elena, but also happens to be a doctor? That’s his sweetheart’s dream profession, for crying aloud; they were supposed to move to New York City for her residency! Thus, we’re hoping Chando’s TVD role, even if it’s a quick one, packs some major punch and jolts Damon wide awake from his murderous, zombie-like state!
That being said, this is all just speculation; our desperate, weary souls could very well be grasping at straws here and over analyzing the situation. Still, to be fair, the white lab coat and stethoscope are rather suspicious details. Do we think she’s Elena in disguise? Of course not – that would be such a random assumption to make, especially since we have yet to receive official information about this newcomer. Do we think, however, that this lovely physician could potentially spark Damon’s desire to rebel against Cade and the sirens even more? That would be quite the treat, for his sake and Stefan’s!
What are your thoughts on this casting choice, fang fans: Are we reading way too much into a perfectly routine guest-starring situation, or is there an underlying significance to it all? Sound off in a comment below!
