15 Incredibly Amazing Facts About Nina Dobrev

Ever since she hit the scene playing Mia Jones on Degrassi: The New Generation, Nina Dobrev has proven she’s a force to be reckoned with. Not only does the Bulgarian-Canadian actress portray Elena Gilbert ever so beautifully on The Vampire Diaries, but she’s stylish, sweet, and generous beyond belief. 1. Her full name is beautiful…and quite the mouthful: Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva! Try saying that five times fast!

2. Forget about being bilingual: trilingual is all the rage in Nina’s household! The screen vixen speaks English, French, and Bulgarian!

3. In 2007, Nina enrolled at Ryerson University with the intention of majoring in sociology. During an interview with the school newspaper, The Eyeopener, she explained why she decided not to take theater classes. “I’d rather do what I’m doing at work and then go to school to learn about something completely different that I don’t know much about so I can expand,” she stated. In 2008, she left college to focus on her acting career.

4. Nina uses her fame to support many important causes, including Project Pink and Hunger Bites. In fact, along with her Degrassi: The Next Generation co-stars, she helped establish a school for children in Kenya via a non-profit organization called Free the Children. Most recently, she has participated in an anti-bullying campaign.

5. She’s a total Potterhead, thus proving she’s not a mere Muggle.

6. Nina enjoys reading and some of her favorite books include The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, and Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels.

7. She’s great friends with the Gossip Girl cast members, including Chase Crawford and Jessica Szohr. She also happens to be a fan of their series herself!

8. Back when TVD’s producers were casting the main roles, many actresses expressed interest in the role of Elena. Ashlee Simpson and Alexandra Chando were among the many eager contenders. However, Nina’s riveting audition blew the competition right out of the water!

9. She’s super athletic! As a child, Nina studied jazz, ballet, and rhythmic gymnastics. Then, in 2005, she participated in the Senior World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Junior World Championships in Plzen, Czech Republic. She also practices yoga!

10. People always assume actors are plucked out of obscurity while doing plebeian things such as shopping with their friends, walking to school, or hitting up the local coffeeshop. It’s actually quite rare — unless you happen to be Ms. Nina Dobrev, of course. While studying at the Armstrong Acting Studio in Toronto, this gifted stunner was discovered by an agent who just happened to be dropping by!

11. Her “Survivor” performance in the MTV movie American Mall was actually inspired by the “Cell Block Tango” musical number from Chicago.

12. This multi-talented star is scuba certified. In order to film the heartbreaking Wickery Bridge scene in The Vampire Diaries Season 3 finale, she was required to take lessons in Bora Bora. That one underwater scene took two 8-hour days to shoot!

13. She resides with an adorable cat who apparently loves the smell of fresh laundry as much as Nina loves cuddling with her. In 2010, she shared a picture of her favorite feline with the following sentiments: “My little Jama-Lynx cat. Ahhh I love this creature more than life itself!!!”

15. Nina inspired a real-life miracle. Yes, it’s true! An adoring fan wrote her a letter describing how her 3-year-old cousin suffers from celebral palsy and how only the sound of Nina’s voice can soothe him. So what did Nina do? She went to Build A Bear and sent the toddler a furry friend — complete with a recorded message just for him!

BONUS: True, TVD’s sizzling romances are a major component of the show, but Nina actually would love to see Elena on her own — at least for a while. She’s Team Elena through and through and even told Alloy Entertainment in 2012 that if it were up to her, she’d want her character to remove herself from all the relationship drama and focus on herself.
