Casting News: Is Claire Holt The New Supergirl?

When it comes to playing kickass ladies on television, Claire Holt is no stranger. The 26-year-old Australian actress has made a name for herself portraying the powerful yet vulnerable Rebekah Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Moreover, she’s set to play a tough cop in the new NBC series Aquarius, a 1960s crime drama which premieres in 2015. Thus, when The Wrap recently revealed that Miss Claire is in the running for the highly coveted Supergirl role on CBS’s upcoming comic-book adaptation — the first of its kind that will feature a female lead — we barely flinched. If there’s anyone who can bring down corrupt organizations, give the bad guys a taste of their own medicine, and save the world from doom, it’s this blonde vixen!

According to The Wrap, the one-hour project will follow the exploits of Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin who flees to Earth upon Krypton’s destruction. Upon arrival to our green planet, she disguises herself as a normal human and tries to go about her life as a member of the Danvers family. However, when she turns 24, something happens that propels her to embrace her special abilities and become the hero she’s destined to be.

Superhero show vet Gerg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Green Lantern) and Ali Adler (Chuck, No Ordinary Family) will co-write the show, which has received a series commitment from the network.

That said, we’re rooting for Claire to land this gig. Obviously the thought of not seeing her on The Originals each week saddens us, but we’re sure Bex can use a break from all the Mikaelson drama every now and then. Plus, Claire has so much talent and such a captivating presence that it’s nice to see her receive the recognition she deserves via exciting new parts. Congrats to her!

In fact, her family is one of the reasons she chose to exit The Originals as a series regular. she really missed her family and wanted to be close to them. 'It was a tough choice that I didn't fully make it right up until the end, because I was enjoying myself so much. But three seasons later, I realized I hadn't been home to Australia in years, I hadn't seen my family, and I hadn't spent time with the people I loved,' she revealed in 2014.

  • As for how she ended up starring with BFF Phoebe Tonkin on not one but TWO series? 'Completely fortuitous' she explains. 'We’re sort of the same demographic I guess, that we appeal to, so we were both up for the same type of roles, but that was just luck. It’s awesome.' Moreover, they've shared the same experience, such as being on a strict budget together. Here's a sweet story about these two best friends that shows just how grounded and hardworking they really are: 'When we first came to America, we didn’t have any money, and we gave ourselves a budget of $50 to go to Target. Because, every time you go into Target, you know, you end up coming out spending $200 or something crazy and everything you didn’t need. Okay, so $50 at Target, that’s it. So we turn up at Target and somehow we’re walking past the doll section of Target, and we see our H2O mermaid dolls in there. And we’re standing there, going, “We are so broke and we have dolls in Target, what went wrong? But yes, we used to have a little frugal Friday where we’d go to Target with $50.' Can't get enough of these stories? Well, apparently Claire helped Phoebe snag a mega hot date to a dance once! 'We were on our first show, H2O, and there was this gorgeous extra, and Phoebe was really shy and she didn’t have a formal date. So I went up and asked him if he would take her to the formal,' she told Just Jared.

  • Her favorites books are To Kill a Mockingbird and the Harry Potter series because they are classic tales that contain wonderful life lessons.

  • When asked her to name her favorite TVD co-star, here's what Claire said: 'My favorite male cast member was Paul Wesley. He is such a riot, he’s so hilarious. People don’t know that about him. He’s just so funny. And really talented, he was one of my best friends when I was working on that show. And female, Candice Accola. She is like the greatest friend you could ever have. She’s so loyal, she’s so fun. She is like Caroline on the show. No, it’s a toss up, Kat and Candice. It’s a tie. Candice is actually this amazing girl’s girl who you just want to be around. And Kat is the most fun ever. The way I met her is we were both taking a dance class in Atlanta, so we were in the same dance class, and I hadn’t worked with her yet. She’s just like fiercely loyal and such a strong, independent woman. She’s so career driven and successful. They’re really powerful and amazing women, and I love them. '

  • Right before TVD, Claire snagged a multi-episode role as Emily Fields' love interest Samara on Pretty Little Liars.

  • She's had some interesting experiences with stuffed animals! Behold her version of.....THE WOMBAT: 'There was this wombat that someone sent, and it was this really ugly, fur thing. They were like, 'Claire, you have to take the wombat when you go to The Originals,' and I left it there on purpose because I didn’t want the stupid wombat. And then they filmed this video for me of the wombat making a trip to The Originals set. And it was this whole production where they put it on the road, and everyone was saying goodbye to the wombat. The delivered it to The Originals set and then a day later the UPM’s dog ate the wombat. So, I got my wish.'

  • She's all about giving back to the community! In fact, while shooting in Atlanta, Claire spent a lot of her off time volunteering. 'I go to a shelter in Atlanta, called the Genesis Center, and it’s this really amazing place where homeless women can come with their newborns,' she told 'They can have other children but a lot of them have newborns. They get education, job training, housing, medical care. And then they have a daycare center for the newborns during the day, so I go and hold babies in Atlanta, in my spare time. It’s really awesome, I love it so much.'

  • She's been dating her current beau for a few years now, and he's had a major impact on her life. How so? Well, aside from his constant love and support, he's helped her realize freshening up is a good thing. 'I feel like when I was in high school and we’d go on those outward summer camps, like probably a week,' Claire told Just Jared with a laugh. 'Which is terrible and I would never do that now.' But don't worry, everyone, because her handsome man has been a positive influence! 'Now, my boyfriend’s a neat freak, so I shower twice a day,' Claire shared. 'I, like, follow in his lead. Yeah, there’s probably been a week-long period there on some camping trip that I’ve gone without. I’ve done a gypsy shower, a little bit of deodorant, wash cloth, makeup wipes.'

  • In an exclusive interview with Alloy Entertainment, she revealed how she prepped for her role at Charmaine: 'Films. Books. I read a book called Policewoman Number One that was so interesting. I read everything i could. I looked at pictures. What did women on the police force wear at that time? Why is she wearing a skirt? That’s not very functional. How can you run after bad guys? Well, women didn’t run after the bad guys. They made coffee. They didn’t do any sort of important police work. My character is the first to be able to do that.'

  • She's pro girl power! Here's what she told our Alloy Entertainment, in 2013, about her favorite friendship on The Originals: 'I think Rebekah realizes that [she] and Hayley are quite similar. They both have been abandoned by their families at one point or another. They feel that sort of pain of not knowing really where they stand in the world. This is a girl who is now her family, as well. And she has always been loyal to her brothers and I think she feel some of that loyalty towards Hayley.'

  • Alongside Phoebe Tonkin, Claire portrayed mermaid Emma Gilbert on H2O: Just Add Water. She originally got into theater and television to save up money for college, but got bit by the acting bug! In 2014 she told Just Jared her alternate goals had acting not panned out the way she'd hoped: 'It sounds really pretentious, but I always wanted to be a doctor, because my dad’s a doctor and I always wanted to follow in his footsteps. But, I went off track a little bit there. My mum just actually read my grade one school book last night and told me I said that I wanted to be a singer or a police woman. So I guess maybe that.'

  • Her favorite thriller? The Silence of the Lambs of course!

  • Her guilty pleasure in life? Ben & Jerry's Choc Chip Cookie Dough !

  • When she's not joking around with Joseph Morgan, she's hanging out and watching movies with Kat Graham and Nina Dobrev! She also enjoys pal-ing around with Daniel Gillies. 'Daniel Gillies, who plays Elijah, is like the prop master, he’s obsessed with them,' she told Just Jared in January 2014. 'He tries to put really weird props in the set all the time. So we did one set and there was a baby carrier, and he was like, he’s so odd.'

  • Claire not only sings beautifully. but she plays the guitar and piano as well. She's so musically inclined! As for her other talents? 'I’ve got a really great whistle. I practice for hours. And I can juggle,' she told Just Jared in a 2014 interview.
