Are you already mourning the end of The Vampire Diaries? It’s okay, we definitely are. Although the series finale is months away — March 10, 2017, to be exact — the very thought of saying goodbye to the dark, mesmerizing world of Mystic Falls is too painful to bear.

That being said, wipe away those tears and take heart, fang fans, for Friday nights won’t be completely devoid of high-stakes romance, adventure, and suspense (yes, even after TVD exits our lives forever upon the conclusion of episode 8×16). And why’s that? Because The Originals will be taking over its 8 pm time slot, starting Friday, March 17!

The CW announced the official air date in a recent press release, and for those of us who have been sitting on pins and needles wondering when the spinoff’s fourth season will premiere ever since the network revealed they’d be pushing it back a few months, the news is music to our ears. We might not be ready to part ways with Caroline, Bonnie, and the Salvatore brothers, but we’re more than eager to reunite with the Mikaelson family and find out what they’ve been up to since the show’s five-year time jump!

“When they shifted the air date, it actually gave us the freedom, weirdly, to shift the timeline in our favor so that we could have more time pass in The Originals between seasons than The Vampire Diaries,” executive producer Julie Plec explained during a sit-down interview with TVLine. “So we get to add an extra couple years on to our time lapse between seasons. It’s actually a good thing. It’s positive to not have to worry about being side by side.”

In other words, all hope is not lost; there will still be plenty of supernatural drama to look forward to in a TVD-less world, and we cannot wait to soak up every last drop of it!
