A few months ago, Entertainment Weekly reported that Joel Gretsch had joined The Vampire Diaries eighth and final season as a mysterious character named Peter Maxwell. Set to make his official debut in episode 8×04, Peter was described as “a blue-collar guy who abandoned his family a long time ago” and “is shocked when his grown son walks back into his life to reconnect — and to drag [him] into a world of supernatural dangers.” Thanks to this detailed summary — along with the fact that the actor happens to have blond hair and striking blue eyes – it didn’t take long for fans to start speculating that this newcomer sounded an awful lot like Matt Donovan’s long-lost father.
So, is he? While we’re eager to find out exactly what Peter’s relation to Matt is (if there even is one) in this next installment, the question we really should be asking ourselves is this: Why is Sybil so keen on locating his whereabouts?
In a new preview clip for “An Eternity of Misery,” the eldest Salvatore brother is seen pulling up to a rural gas station in search of Peter – and growing irritated with an attendant named Lou, who has no idea where his employer is. Completely unaware that he’s in the presence of a murderous bloodsucking creature, Lou tries to make small talk. “What brings you out here?” he inquires.
“You know, it’s hard to say,” Damon responds with a heavy sigh. “To be honest, I’m not even the one who cares about finding your boss. There’s a woman – and I use that term loosely – named Sybil who wants to. So, inextricably, here I am.”
Press ‘play’ to witness the interaction for yourselves, then drop us a comment telling us why you think Sybil bothered to send her #1 henchmen on such a seemingly dull mission.
The Vampire Diaries is new this Friday night at 8:00 p.m. EST on The CW!
