EXCLUSIVE! Charles Michael Davis Talks Babies & Encroaching on Daniel Gillies’s Turf

Marcel Gerard in The Originals Season 3 Episode 4 - exclusive interview with Charles Michael Davis

When Joseph Morgan announced via twitter that The Originals Season 3 is “without a shadow of a doubt, the the most dynamic, gripping and intoxicating season yet,” he wasn’t exaggerating. With The Strix shaking things up in New Orleans and a war about to break out among the bitter sire lines, it’s safe to say the danger meter is at all-time high. That being said, while we have a pretty good idea as to where the Mikaelson siblings’ loyalties lie (“Always and Forever” indeed), we do remain curious about the allegiance of their adopted family member, Marcel Gerard.

What does the future hold for this charming, calm, and enterprising vamp? Will he be getting his hands dirty this year, or will he be turning over a new leaf? Well, we caught up with actor Charles Michael Davis, who recently directed Andy Allo’s “Don’t Ever Say” music video, and he indulged us with plenty of scoop on all the heart-pounding suspense, potential romances, and brutal showdowns to come. Sink your teeth into the exclusive details right below, darlings!

Alloy Entertainment: In Season 1, Marcel’s goal was to maintain his rule over the French Quarter. However, a lot has changed since then. What is his prime focus in Season 3?
Charles Michael Davis:
That’s a great question. It’s actually taking shape in the first half of Season 3 and I think we’ll see the arc of it in the last half. I can’t give that away just yet. But what we do know about his character is that he’s pretty ambitious and a good investor. He’s like Charlie Munger or Warren Buffett — he waits for the opportune time and then invests heavily. Now with the family members — the Mikaelsons — out of the picture and the sire line members coming in, it might be prime time for Marcel to not only do a little investigating and figure out who these new characters are, but to also take back the city. Since the beginning of the show, he’s had somewhat of an entrepreneurial spirit — this natural desire to built things up and expand —  so we’ll see how things play out.

Alloy Entertainment: Marcel definitely bides his time, which is one of his strong suits. Personally, my favorite Marcel scene occurred in 2×11, “Brotherhood of the Damned.” The powerful speech, his amazing ability to rile up the troops — that’s what this character is all about. How will Marcel’s leadership skills come into play this season, especially with the Trinity wreaking havoc?
Charles Michael Davis:
In the past we’ve gotten to see Marcel lead others, emotionally and logically, and now he’s trying to lead by example. He’s currently under pressure and is sort of being attacked with the Trinity coming into town. And so, with that, you get to see how resourceful he is, and how quickly he reacts to threatening situations. You’ll also see how he well he uses his time — sort of like how professional athletes hone their craft off the field, which is why they can do what they do under pressure.

Alloy Entertainment: With the Trinity stirring up trouble, will Marcel be forced to choose sides in the upcoming sire line war? Will there be increased tension between him and Klaus this year?
Charles Michael Davis:
I think Marcel wants to be removed from all the drama, especially since these people are like past demons coming back to haunt Klaus. And so, unless it affects the city and his community on a larger scale — sort of like the conversation he had about tourism dropping in the French Quarter  — he’s not one to go running with the bulls. He won’t jump into the fight if it’s not necessary, unlike Klaus who has the advantage of not being able to be killed easily and, thus, can be swayed by his rage and emotions. Marcel has to pick and choose his battles. That’s not to say he’s not in the loop with all the on-goings in [NOLA]; he’s very good at observing. Personally, I view Klaus as the Tasmanian Devil: He whips around town like this feisty force of nature, creating a whirlwind along the way; as long as you’re near him but don’t get sucked into it, you’ll be fine.

Alloy Entertainment: Speaking of alliances, what’s the state of Marcel’s relationship with Davina? He’s always been somewhat of a father figure to her, but now that she’s Regent, will she give him attitude and tell him to back the hell off her turf?
Charles Michael Davis: Davina has created a little island for herself and although her island is still close to Marcel’s island, it’s on its own and surrounded by water; because if it was connected to land, it wouldn’t be an island. But I guess that goes with saying, right? [Laughs] Anyway, she’s a bit isolated right now and her closest island-hopping partner is still Marcel. He’s worried about her, and you’ll definitely see the two of them communicate more with each other in upcoming episodes.

Alloy Entertainment: Perhaps it’s just my imagination, but I sensed some chemistry between Marcel and Freya. Would he ever cross that line, considering how much he loves Rebekah?
Charles Michael Davis:
There is a line in the recent episode where I tell Elijah, “No offense to your lovely sister.” I asked [executive producer] Michael Narducci if I could just be honest with this line and he goes, “No no no no no. You still love Rebekah.” And I was like, “Oh yea — you’re right! You’re right.” [
Laughs] But I think that Riley [Voelkel] is wonderful, and has such a great personality. All of us in the cast get along really well in real life, and I’m glad that natural chemistry shows.

Alloy Entertainment: On a lighter note, will we ever see any scenes between Elijah and Baby Hope? Will he assume any uncle duties this year? He needs some happy memories in his life!
Charles Michael Davis:
[
Laughs] I think that’s a fantasy for women — to see a man holding a cute baby. I’ll see if I can work that. I think that the reason you gave sounds great, but I’m just going to go to the writers and say, “Hey look, fans want to see me, possibly in a suit, holding a baby. It might not fit in the storyline, but let’s figure out a way to make it work.”

Alloy Entertainment: Speaking of suits, there’s a gala coming up on The Originals, and in the sneak peek photos, we see you and Daniel Gillies dressed to the nines in tuxes. Did you have to take any dance lessons to prep for this fancy occasion? Was there a suit walk-off by any chance?
Charles Michael Davis:
Gillies took dance lessons for the episode — I already take them on my own in order to keep an edge up on him. [
Laughs] But, no no no…There was a thing, however, where people were surprised by the sight of me in a suit. I would walk around set and makeup, wardrobe, and crew members would come up to me independently and go, “You know, everyone’s been talking and they think you look great.” Well, thanks — thank you. [Laughs] The funny thing, though, is that when I first signed onto the show, everyone kept asking if I had any ideas in mind about my character, and I was all, “I think he would wear a suit all the time.” Clearly I hadn’t done my research because they pointed out, “Um, that’s Gillies’s thing actually.” And of course my immediate response was, “What do you mean that’s Gillies’s thing — he has a monopoly on suits?” But he does — he really does. [Laughs]

Alloy Entertainment: How Hugo Boss hasn’t recruited any of these characters as official spokesmen is beyond me.
Charles Michael Davis: [Laughs] I don’t know….Maybe they will after the next episode.

Alloy Entertainment: What words of wisdom would you, as Charles, like to impart upon the Mikaelson siblings as they prepare for war?
Charles Michael Davis: Obviously I’m biased and want to see Marcel do well, so I’d say, “Go all out! Take everyone who poses a threat to you and family down.” Basically I want to see a royal rumble in which Marcel lingers in the back and watches as, one by one, everyone else gets thrown out of the ring — maybe he even gets a fight or two in — and then emerges the victor.

So, fang fans, what’s at the top of your wish list for Marcel Gerard this year? Hit the comments and let us know. Oh, and be sure to catch a wicked, new episode of The Originals, airing this Thursday night at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, while you’re at it!
