When Matt Donovan left Mystic Falls at the end of The Vampire Diaries season 7, many viewers were happy to see him get a fresh start in a far less dangerous town; after years of grief, loss, and busing tables at the Mystic Grill to put food on the table after his parents basically abandoned him, he deserved a chance at a normal life. Then again, we were also saddened by the news because it meant we might never get to peer into those honest, beautiful eyes again. No Matty Blue Blue? You may as well drive a white oak dagger right through our hearts.

That being said, dry away those tears, fang fans, because you’ll be seeing plenty of this lovable human throughout the show’s final season. Not only is Matt returning home, but it seems like he’s finally receiving the meaningful storyline he deserves — one that doesn’t involve him despising vampires one minute and helping them out the next. According to what Zach Roerig revealed to our friends at TooFab during a roundtable interview at San Diego Comic-Con 2016, his character’s journey in season 8 is full of little surprises.

“This is going to be an explosive season for Matt, ” the actor stated, explaining that while his character’s arc is going to get off to a slow start compared to everyone else’s , it will pick up speed soon enough — especially after some interesting reveals along the way. “When Matt comes back to town, it’s going to enrich the character in a [new] way,” he hinted.

How so, exactly? While Zach wouldn’t say, but he did tease that Matt’s mysterious lineage will be explored further. “Just think about Matt being the only human in the show, no family,” Zach pointed out. “We’re gonna learn [that] the Donovan family history is also supernatural and crazy. I think you’ll be very surprised when Matt comes back to town.” Ah, we can’t wait to find out more!
